About three years after the Indians Moved to Alcatraz Island. On the 27th of February in 1973, the American Indian movement took the town of Wounded Knee. Several hundred Oglala Lakota Indians and their supporters over ran the nearby church. They had taken hostages to get the peoples attention about the fight against Wilson. Also to try to put an end to the towns corrupt leaders. The U.S has made 371 treaties with the Native Americans. All of them were broken. The event of Wounded Knee had occurred after the time of the "Red Power". As a way of gaining Native Americans trust back we gave the Indians a good deal of land. We gave them approximately 110 million acres of land for a reservation. The Indians would lease a single acre of land for 80 cents. The land the U.S gave to the American Indians consisted of more than the U.S had realized. This land had consisted of one of the largest gold mines in Western hemisphere. Also the Native Americans received the Black Hills in this settlement. But finding out about the gold mine and the Black Hills, the government thought it to be unfair. The government yet again cheated the American Indians out of another agreement.
